Fortune Telling is an integral part of many cultures. Be it Tarot Cards, ancient Runes, I Ching, palmistry or dowsing, humans across the ages have always sought to divine the future. From the Delphic Oracle and old superstitions to the weekly horoscope column and four leaf clovers, divination although regarded with doubt, has always been immensely popular, both among believers and skeptics. One of the simplest divinatory tools is of course the pendulum which can be used to answer specific yes or no questions about the future or to seek spiritual guidance.
What Is A Pendulum?
Traditionally the pendulum is a long strip of thread with a small weight attached. Almost anything that can swing freely can be used to make a pendulum. Instead of a thread, you can use twine or even a chain, and the weight can be a ring or a crystal or a small piece of wood or metal, as long as it suits you. One can opt to buy a pendulum from a New Age store or even make one for yourself. Crystal pendulums in particular tend to be the most beautiful and powerful because of the natural vibrations of the crystal used.
The main thing to remember when using or choosing a pendulum is that it must feel right. It must be a good match for you and your energy. You know a pendulum is a good match when, as you handle it, you feel a correlating response within the body that is positive or high-vibration (a kind of singing in the spirit). Conversely, if you feel an odd or negative feeling in the body (such as in your gut or heart) when handling a pendulum, it is not a match. Move on and sample another.
Your pendulum is a friend. You don’t just call anybody a friend, do you? Therefore choose wisely.
Why Should I Use A Pendulum?
Like most divinatory tools, one can use the pendulum to access one’s subconscious mind or the Higher Self and seek enlightenment. You can also use it to communicate with spirits and contact them for assistance or take a peek into your own or someone else’s future. A pendulum can even be used to find out more about a mysterious health issue and a possible cure.
What Sort Of Questions Should I Ask?
Always keep in mind that the future is not set in stone and is subject to one’s choices, free will, and the dictates of fate. Think of the future as an ever-changing, misty, uncharted world that you’re glimpsing from afar. The best forms of divination do not literally foretell the future, but prepare the user for an inevitable outcome or suggest the best course of action for a given scenario.
Thus, one should use a pendulum not to find out if X will marry Y, but rather if X and Y are compatible or if there are any roadblocks in a relationship between X and Y. Always remember that divination is more about learning and being guided by the Divine than knowing without a doubt what the future has in store.
Before asking a question, think it through. Phrase it so that it is clear and simple and brief. Be specific. The more complicated your question is phrased, the more difficulty the pendulum will have answering it. I suggest also writing the question down ahead of time and reading it exactly as you prepared it.
Think of questions that can only have a YES or a NO answer and not a MAYBE. Ask about any important choice you have to make, what your inner self feels about a particular issue, if your hunches are correct or not. Alternatively you can also use it find anything that is missing- be it a treasured item or a loved pet.
How To Use A Pendulum
1. Relax Before You Get Started: This is extremely important. You will be asking questions, yes, but you must not be overly invested in the answer. For this reason it is often easier to ask questions for other people than for yourself.
Of course, though, we all have personal questions we’d like to ask. And you absolutely can, you just have to make sure you are completely neutral when doing so. For example, if you’re wildly in love with Bob and you ask the pendulum whether Bob will ever marry you (which you really really want), you must be incredibly neutral and passive or else it will not work. In other words, you cannot be crying over Bob as you use the pendulum. If you are too invested in the answer, it is almost guaranteed that you will receive a false positive from your pendulum, or an incorrect answer.
To insure neutrality, sit in a quiet spot and clear your mind of all worries and negative thoughts before using the pendulum. For best results you should meditate for at least 20 to 30 minutes. You can also listen to soft music, take a cleansing bath or even a small nap to bring yourself into a proper, relaxed frame of mind. Make sure you have your written questions close.
When you are ready, sit upright and hold the pendulum centrally just above your knees. Swing it in a to and fro motion towards and away from you. This is the pendulum’s ‘neutral’ position.
2. Figure Out The Yes And No Responses: Now you’re ready to begin. Move your hand over your dominant knee and ask the pendulum out loud to show you its Yes response. Notice what it does. Traditionally, a pendulum will move in a clockwise circular movement when answering Yes, but this is not always the case, which is why testing is important. Your pendulum may swing side to side, diagonally, or even counter-clockwise. When you’re done, move your hand over your non dominant knee and ask for its No response. This will be markedly different from the Yes answer.
3. Test It With A Few Simple Statements: Keep practicing until you’re sure of your pendulum’s Yes and No responses. Once you’re confident, ask some simple questions regarding your name, age, family, work, etc. Only ask questions to which you know the answers. Take note of the responses. If the answers are correct, you’ll know you’re all set to go.
4. Ask Your Question: Once again, make sure your question is as specific and to the point as possible. Avoid anything vague and be as relevant as possible. It is best to keep a notebook at hand, not only to record the pendulum’s responses but also any feelings and physical sensations that accompany the responses.
In between questions, make sure you have stopped the pendulum completely to clear any lingering energy from the last question. Also, always trust your instincts.
After you’re done with your questions and answers, thank the Divine Power and store your pendulum in a safe and private place, preferably a silk pouch or special box. You can also cleanse it by holding it under running water, soaking it in sea salt or by visualizing a protective white light around it. This will ensure that your pendulum will be perfectly ready for your next session.
As you are probably sensing by now, a pendulum can serve a variety of needs. If you’re particularly good at fortune telling, you can offer to do readings for others with their permission. You can use it to explore past lives, discover ley lines, contact ancestors and beings from the spirit world or even test a particular food or drink for benefit or detriment. You can also use it to sense someone else’s aura and get a better idea about their health and what ails them. Be creative. For instance if you’re searching for an object lost in the house, hold your pendulum above a map or floor plan of your house and ask questions.
